The National Youth Service Corps popularly known as NYSC is one of the few programmes set-up by the military government under General Yakubu Gowon. The main idea of the programme was to foster national unity amongst Young Nigerian graduates of Tertiary Institutions. For more than 20 years, the programme has continued to help in building relationships.
Sammie and Susan met at the Rivers State orientation camp at Nowagba in Tai Local Government area of the state. Sammie and Susan both studied Economics and so it was easy for them to bond and get along. Placed in the same platoon, the duo seemed to have many things in common, from Susan's love for photos to Sammie's love for taking them, everything just seemed to converge. Sammie got a job at the Rivers State Government Secretariat at Port Harcourt Local Government Area (PHALGA) while his SPA was at the State art exhibition gallery. Susan on the other hand was lucky to secure a job at Deluxe Oil and Gas; a leading Oil and Gas company in the Niger Delta part of the country. She was a certified Chartered Accountant from ICAN and her skill somehow made a great way for her. It was here she met Soji, one of the bright brains who just finished his Master's degree in Process Technology at Oxford University in the UK was employed a Year later.
Secretly, she hid her relationship with Sammie and kicked things off with Soji. Soji; brilliant, dark skinned, always jovial was an hot stuff in his company. Many were confused when he began to pick things up with Susan. After an heartbreak years ago during his Master's degree in UK, Soji promised not to love again but somehow Susan captivated his heart. Something in the way she spoke reminded him of his late mother, something in the way she laughed brought back memories of his dead Twin Sister, Sola.
At this point, Cynthia stopped as her drink was finished. Soji wanted to ask for a refill but she stopped him and continued the story. "Soji promised he would settle down in Lagos his NYSC year but 3 months later, he sent me a text saying he would prefer to stay back in PH. I was just in 300 Level preparing for my final year, so I thought it wasn't a big issue".
"When did you know it was over?" Soji asked.
"... when he told me he had a son elsewhere"
